INTRODUCTION

God wants to communicate Himself to us. He desires to share with and send forth into us His thoughts, His character, His wisdom, His love--His very being. One of the ways He does this is by inviting us to spend a time with Him each day when we focus our inner being--our spirit--upon Him.

As we focus on Him, He will make Himself more and more real to us. As we come to Him through Jesus, we will learn to know Him in a deeper way, and our very being will be filled with His Spirit. We then become a vessel of His nature and love, by which He is able to make known His nature and ways to others.

These brief daily devotions are offered to you to encourage and help you in getting to know God and experiencing His life- changing Presence in a more real way. God will meet people where they are--people like me, who believed in Jesus but was in bondage to alcoholism, insecurity, and lust; people who need to know and experience His power over sin, His forgiveness, His ability to restore, and the joy of His Presence.

God is able to do this--for you. I know, because He is doing it for me. He is able to impart His Spirit into you so that you will know the joy of sharing Him with others. I know, because He is doing that for me as well.

Rich Fick

"O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good:
for his mercy endures for ever." (Psalms 136:1 KJV)

These words of David are the theme of this devotional booklet. David knew that God is good. He is encouraging others to believe this truth, and to react accordingly.

I too know that God is good. He has been merciful to me as He has delivered me from alcoholism, lust and other sinful addictions. He has also freed me from curses of witchcraft and from other satanic strongholds. His love and mercy have freed me from deep-seated insecurities and fears that had me in spiritual and emotion-al bondage.

Now He is imparting His life into me so that I want to live for Him, and no longer live only to please myself. He is showing me His goodness as He now uses me to help others know and experience Him.

By myself, I have no goodness in me. My previous lifestyle attests to that. But God, in His goodness, imparts His life into me, making me good. I am now good because I know a good God who imparts His goodness into my being as I focus on and receive His goodness made known and available to me through Jesus Christ.

I pray that you too will grow in knowing, receiving and imparting to others God's goodness.

Truly, God is good.

Richard Fick, 1993

1. GOD IS GOOD: HE SHOWS ME HOW TO RECEIVE LIFE FROM HIM.

"[Jesus said,] I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." (John 10:10 KJV, brackets added)

God shows me His goodness by offering to me and providing for me a way out of my sinfulness. I used to try to improve myself. I lived a life of regrets--regretting the wrongs I had done and hoping I'd be able to change myself so I would do better. I'd always be saying, "I'm sorry, and I promise I won't do it again." However, my vowing to make myself better only caused me to continue in my sinful ways. In fact, it seemed that the more I vowed and the harder I tried, the worse I became.

But Jesus showed me how to live. He taught me how to receive life from above. He came to give God's life to me. He taught me how to bring my old ways to death through His cross, so that the new life from God could come forth.

The new life of God that has come to me through Jesus empowers me with love and joy. This new life gives me the grace to become free from sin and to live as God wants me to live. New ways, new attitudes, and new actions come forth as Jesus lives His life from within my being.

A PRAYER

Lord Jesus, live in me. Thank You for giving me a new life and for dying for me so that my old ways can die.

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Think of a new attitude or desire you are receiving from God. Thank Him for it and share it with someone else.

2. GOD IS GOOD: THROUGH JESUS, HE SAVES ME FROM HIS WRATH.

"God judges the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day." (Psalms 7:11 KJV)

"But he [Jesus] was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities…" (Isaiah 53:5 KJV, brackets added)

God shows me His goodness by sending Jesus to bear His wrath for me. God is angry with those who deceive others and encourage them in their sinful ways. He is angry at those who hurt others by their self-centered ways. God is angry with those who teach others to trust in themselves rather than in Him.

We have all done these things. As the Bible says, "All we like sheep have gone astray." God is justifiably angry with us all.

But Jesus paid for our sins. He willingly took our sinful ways upon Himself. He willingly bore the punishment of our sins for us. God vented upon Jesus the wrath He had against us.

Now, through Jesus, God looks favorably upon us. Through Jesus, God sees my sins paid for. Through Jesus, He sees my sins removed from me. Through Jesus, His Spirit brings me a new life. Through Jesus I can spend all of eternity with God--beginning now!

A PRAYER

Lord Jesus, thank You for dying for me. Thank You for bearing the punishment due to me. Let Your Spirit live in me, Lord Jesus, helping me to share with others the love and forgiveness You give me.

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

See the sin and darkness in your soul, and its guilt and shame, going onto Jesus at His cross. See His light and life coming into you.

3. GOD IS GOOD: HE HEALS THE WOUNDS IN MY HEART.

[Jesus said,] He [God] hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted." (Luke 4:18 KJV brackets added)

God shows His goodness to us as He brings His love and comfort to bear on the wounds we've received from life in this world.

We look to others to give us love and affirmation. We put our hopes upon men. People fail us. They betray us. They let us down. They abuse us with words. They abuse us with actions. They, like us, are sinners--lost without Christ.

We become wounded. Our spirits become broken, and we lose our zeal for life and for the things of God. We feel over-whelmed by the problems of life. We even sometimes seek to escape through excessive TV watching, through abusing drugs, alcohol or food, or through just going off by ourselves.

But Jesus comes to heal the brokenness in our heart. Through His Word and His Spirit, He speaks to our wounded spirit. He reminds us of His love. He brings truth and overcomes the lies we've received. He brings life when we're depressed and dormant. He gives us His joy for our sorrow. He leads us to look at Him, rather than to others, for our affirmation. He encourages us to bring our pain, our fear, our hopelessness to Him. He gives His joy, His love, and His comfort and understanding to us. He heals us.

A PRAYER

Thank You, Jesus, for allowing us to give You our pain and exchanging it for Your joy and peace. Help me to share my heartaches with You.

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Look at Jesus. Focus on what He would give to you for the day, and thank Him for it.

4. GOD IS GOOD: HE TURNS ME FROM MY SIN AND CAUSES ME TO SEEK HIS WAY OF LIVING.

"Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities." (Acts 3:26 KJV)

God shows me His goodness by showing me my need of Him. He shows me the emptiness of life without Him as its center. He shows me the emptiness of living without hearing His voice within me. He shows me how impossible it is to keep from doing wrong and hurting others, unless I receive life and wisdom from Him each day.

He has shown me how to live through Jesus. Jesus heard from His Father in heaven. He listened to Him. He did what He saw His Father doing. Jesus was filled with the Spirit of God. He shows me how to be like Himself, living with God as my center, and receiving His power to do right.

A PRAYER

Lord Jesus, thank You that You have shown me how to live. Thank You that You lived a life with God as Your Center. Help me to live as You did, listening to the Spirit of God and being directed by Him in all things.

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Think about one of the stories about Jesus. What character traits do you see in Him? See Jesus giving those character traits to you as you spend time focusing on Him.

5. GOD IS GOOD: HE SHOWS ME HOW TO LIVE, THROUGH JESUS AS MY EXAMPLE.

"[Jesus said,] Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart." (Matthew 11:29 KJV, brackets added)

God shows His goodness to me by sending Jesus to show me how to live. Jesus is my example of a complete man. He is the great example of how we can reach our full potential. Jesus showed me how to live in continual fellowship with God. He did not live by what He saw or thought; He lived by listening to His Spirit--His conscience, His inner voice. He was constantly listening to His Father. He had an awareness of God's abiding presence with Him. He did what He perceived His Father was doing, receiving wisdom, understanding, and love from Him.

Jesus invites us to enter that same relationship. He promises to fill us with His Holy Spirit so we can be in continual fellowship with the Father. He invites us to be directed by Him as He speaks through our conscience--our inner voice, or spirit. He promises to put His Spirit within us so we can constantly know and rest in His love and presence.

A PRAYER

Lord Jesus, live in me. Help me to listen to the voice of Your Spirit within me. Let me live for You and not for myself.

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Listen for God's voice as He speaks through the Spirit of Christ, Who lives within those who have received Him.

6. GOD IS GOOD: HE DRAWS ME TO HIMSELF THROUGH JESUS.

"Jesus said unto him, "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father." (John 14:9 KJV)

God shows His goodness to me as He sends Jesus to draw me back to Himself. Because of my sinful desires and actions, I have run away from God. I have not wanted to live for Him nor to depend upon Him. I have not wanted to let His Spirit direct my conscience into listening to His voice. I have thought that my way of living was best for me. I have been afraid of God's wrath, not knowing His desire to comfort me.

But God, in His goodness, sent Jesus to draw me to Himself. Jesus only did what He saw His Father doing. Jesus healed the sick because it was God's desire to do so. Jesus took time to love the little children because it was His Father's desire to do so. Jesus went to the outcasts of society and expressed concern for them and interest in them because it was His Father's desire to do so. Jesus had compassion for the multitudes, comforting those who were wounded spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically, because it was His Father's desire to do so.

Jesus came to show us the true nature of God. We can know our Heavenly Father through Jesus.

A PRAYER

Father, thank You for sending Jesus to reveal Your true nature to me. Help me to come to you through Jesus and to live for You as Jesus did, by the power of Your Holy Spirit.

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Think about the character of Jesus as revealed through the Bible. Thank God that He is that way.

7. GOD IS GOOD: HE TURNS ME AROUND SO THAT I SEEK HIM.

"[It is] the goodness of God leads thee to repentance." (Romans 2:4 KJV, brackets added)

God shows His goodness by turning men from their self-centered ways of living to please themselves, into Jesus’ ways of receiving God’s life and of living for Him.

Many of us used to concentrate on living to enjoy the "pleasures" of life--partying, accumulating things, caring only for ourselves. We were self-centered, unaware of the needs of others.

But now, with the life of Jesus in us, our interests and desires are changing. We begin to care about the needs of others. We want to share with others the love and the power of the life of Christ in us.

We now can be concerned with the needs of others, knowing that through prayer we can bring the goodness of God to them also.

A PRAYER

Lord Jesus, I believe that You are good. Thank You for coming to earth and showing me how to live, bringing God's goodness to others. Thank You that through Your life living in me, I can be a blessing to others. Live in me and help me to show others Your goodness.

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Look for ways you can see God's goodness extended to you, and extend His goodness to one other person this day.

8. GOD IS GOOD: HE FORGIVES AND CLEANSES ME WHEN I CONFESS MY SINS TO HIM.

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9 KJV)

God shows His goodness to me through His willingness to forgive me for my sinful actions, and through His ability to change my inner desires and attitudes.

When we are filled with attitudes of lust, greed, and bitterness, our actions will be sinful, damaging to ourselves and others. Our actions will reflect the inner desires of our heart. We will lose true friends and will find others being cold and bitter toward us.

But when we admit our sinful behavior to God, and confess the wrong attitudes and desires we have kept within us, God forgives us. We no longer have to feel guilty, ashamed, or fearful of God.

As we focus on Jesus, and adopt His character as our example, He gives us His attitudes and desires. We start to become like Him, through the power of His Holy Spirit.

We can be changed. We can live a meaningful and purposeful life.

A PRAYER

Lord Jesus, help me to confess my sins to You. Help me to let the light of Your Spirit shine in my heart, exposing my sinful attitudes and desires. Fill me with Your Spirit so that Your nature can be developed in me.

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Think about Jesus. See Him on His cross, taking your sins upon Himself. Receive His light and His life.

9. GOD IS GOOD: HE SHOWS ME HOW TO FORGIVE OTHERS.

"Then said Jesus, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." (Luke 23:34 KJV)

God shows His goodness to me as He models for me, in Jesus, the pattern of forgiving others. When others hurt me, or do things that I feel are wrong, I have a choice. I can forgive them and pray that God will change them, or I can become bitter and resentful toward them, hoping that they will be punished quickly and severely for what they have done.

When I choose punishment for those who have wronged me, anger and bitterness grow within me. This anger and bitterness affect my outlook on life and my treatment of others. My anger and bitterness keep me from functioning properly. I become unable to do well in my tasks and assignments. Life becomes an overbearing series of problems rather than a God-filled experience.

Jesus, however, shows me how to forgive. He shows me that those who hurt me do not understand what they are doing. They miss the joy of blessing others, including me. That is why He says, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."

A PRAYER

Lord Jesus, fill me with Your Spirit of forgiveness. I give my bitterness and anger to You. Help me to forgive those who hurt me and to pray for them.

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Think of people who have mistreated you. Ask God to help you to forgive each of them. Pray that they would be changed by God's power working in them.

10. GOD IS GOOD: HE SHOWS ME THE TRUTH.

"Jesus said unto him, ‘I am the…truth..." (John 14:6 KJV)

God shows His goodness to me by revealing truth to me. He shows me the lies I have believed--lies like, "Sin is fun," or, "I don't need direction from God. I can figure things out for myself." I used to believe that living in sin was fun, and that we should live to "eat, drink, and feel good."

I was denying the consequences of my actions. I was unaware that my self-centered attitudes and behavior were hurting other people. I denied my responsibility as a man, a husband, and a father, living mainly to please myself. I thought I could figure things out for myself and could change myself if ever I felt it necessary to do so.

But God in His goodness showed me the truth. He revealed to me the lies I had believed and lived in. He showed me the wretchedness of sin and the consequences of my selfishness--no one wanted to be with me.

He revealed to me His truth. There is a hell. We need Jesus to deliver us from the power of sin and hell. He showed me the truth that through Christ I can be changed. He showed me that Jesus, and His ways, are The Truth.

A PRAYER

Lord Jesus, help me to live in truth. Help me to know the deceitfulness of sin and satan. Let Your Spirit of truth remind me of my need of You.

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Think about some of the lies you have believed. Thank Jesus that He is freeing you from them, and think about Him and the truth He is bringing to you.

11. GOD IS GOOD: HE SHOWS ME HOW I CAN SHARE WITH OTHERS THE LOVE AND FORGIVENESS I RECEIVE FROM HIM.

"Freely ye have received, freely give." (Matthew 10:8 KJV)

God shows His goodness to me as He gives me chances to share with others what He has given me. When we lived for ourselves, seeking pleasure only for ourselves, depending upon ourselves, thinking of freedom as the ability to do whatever we wanted, life was very busy but empty. Often we were too busy to notice the beauty of creation, or to give away a smile or a kind word. We were unaware of the deep spiritual needs of others because we were too busy serving ourselves.

When we let the life and spirit of Christ come into us and affect our ideas, attitudes, feelings, and desires, things change. We receive a new perspective on life. We can now take time to commune with God. His Word comes alive, and an inner joy rises up within us.

As we follow Him, He cleanses us and we become filled with a passion to see others come into knowing Jesus as we do. Our lives become changed from self-centeredness to Christ-centeredness, and our greatest joy becomes giving to others what God has given to us.

A PRAYER

Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me how to live. Thank You for giving Your life for me and to me. Help me to give Your love and forgiveness to others.

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Look for someone who seems lonely or depressed today. Give them a friendly greeting with a smile.

12. GOD IS GOOD: HE SPEAKS TO ME.

"[Jesus said,] ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’" (Matthew 4:4 KJV, brackets added)

God shows His goodness to me by speaking to me, even when at times I do not listen. God speaks to me through the example of Jesus, through His Word written down (the Bible), and through His Holy Spirit.

Jesus is God's revelation to me as to how to live. Jesus is God's way of communicating His love and concern for me. Jesus is God's way of drawing me back from my self-centered ways into His ways.

God speaks to me through His written Word, the Bible. God's desires and ways are written in this Book. God wants me to know about Him, to trust Him and to follow His ways. He has spoken through the Bible and is waiting for me to learn what He has said.

God speaks to me through His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit reveals to me my need of Jesus. He shows me the possibility of exchanging my ways for His. God reveals His truth to my inner being by His Spirit. He reveals Himself as a loving Father to me by His Spirit.

A PRAYER

Thank You, Father, that you reveal Yourself to me through Jesus, through the Bible, and through the Holy Spirit. Help me to listen to You, and give me grace to obey You in all things.

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Think about the ways God speaks to you. Listen to Him each day. What has He said to you lately? Follow Him.
