The Definition of Mt. Zion: (from Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary)

[ZIE un] (fortification)--the city of David and the city of God. The meaning of the word "Zion" underwent a distinct progression in its usage throughout the Bible.

The first mention of Zion in the Bible is in 2 Samuel 5:7 (NKJV): "David took the stronghold of Zion (that is, the City of David)." Zion, therefore, was the name of the ancient JEBUSITE fortress situated on the southeast hill of Jerusalem at the junction of the Kidron Valley and the Tyropoeon Valley. The name came to stand not only for the fortress but also for the hill on which the fortress stood. After David captured "the stronghold of Zion" by defeating the Jebusites, he called Zion "the City of David" (1 Kings 8:1; 1 Chronicles 11:5; 2 Chronicles 5:2 NKJV).

When Solomon built the Temple on Mt. Moriah (a hill distinct and separate from Mount Zion), and moved the ark of the covenant there, the word "Zion" expanded in meaning to include also the Temple and the Temple area (Psalm 2:6; 48:2,11-12; 132:13). It was only a short step until Zion was used as a name for the city of Jerusalem, the land of Judah, and the people of Israel as a whole. (Isaiah 40:9; Jeremiah 31:12) The prophet Zechariah spoke of the sons of Zion (Zechariah 9:13). By this time the word "Zion" had come to mean the entire nation of Israel.

The most important use of the word "Zion" is in a religious or theological sense. Zion is used figuratively of Israel as the people of God (Isaiah 60:14). The spiritual meaning of Zion is continued in the New Testament, where it is given the Christian meaning of God's spiritual kingdom, the church of God, the heavenly Jerusalem. (Hebrews 12:22; Revelation14:1)

The Call and Description

"But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel." (Hebrews 12:22-24 NKJV)

This passage indicates that through Christ we have been brought to Mt. Zion, Godís City, also called the "Heavenly Jerusalem." We are gathered here with the whole church of God--Christians from all denominations--as well as with a countless number of angels. (The liturgical church has always recognized and celebrated this truth in the communion service with the words and song, "Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Thy glorious name, evermore praising Thee and saying, ĎHoly, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth, Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory; Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He, Blessed is He, Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the Highest.í")

The call to focus on living in Mt. Zion is one which Paul also encourages in his letter to the church at Colossae. He says, "If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth." (Colossians 3:1-2 NKJV) The idea is, though we walk as humans on this earth, in our spirit we are to remember that we have been brought into Godís heavenly city, the New Jerusalem or "Mt. Zion." We are to bring the blessings and the influence of Godís heavenly kingdom down to this earth. Through Christ we can do this. Jesus Himself lived this way when He walked on the earth. His message was, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matthew 4:17 NKJV) When He sent out His disciples He instructed them, "And as you go, preach, saying, ĎThe kingdom of heaven is at hand.í" (Matthew10:7 NKJV) Jesus only did what He saw His Father doing (John 5:19-20). He spoke the words His Father gave Him to speak (John 12:50). Now Jesus lives in heaven, and He invites us to live as He lived. He sends His Spirit into us so that we can know, speak, and do the words and works of God as Jesus did. (John 16:13; John 14:12) We need great grace from God to be able to live this way, but Paul said, "...those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ." (Romans 5:17 NKJV)

What are the some of the activities and characteristics of this heavenly city? What are our rights and privileges, duties and tasks as citizens of this city? These are some of the questions this booklet will address.

I. Activities in Godís Heavenly City --Mt. Zion

A. Worship and Praise

Mt. Zion is a place where people from every nation will be gathered together worshipping and praising God. We will know God and will honor and worship His holiness and thank Him for all He has done in bringing us here and making us aware of His glorious presence. The Bible says:

"But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant." (Heb.12:22-24 NKJV)

"Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in His holy mountain." (Ps. 48:1 NKJV)

B. Rejoicing

Godís Heavenly City is a place where those who are gathered will be rejoicing in Him--rejoicing in the greatness of God, in what He has done for them, and in what He is doing and will do throughout the earth. We will rejoice as we know and enter into Godís plan for the earth. We will rejoice even when the darkness in the world increases, knowing that God will bring forth His glory through His heavenly people on the earth amidst the temporary increase of darkness. God will use the time of darkness to reveal His glory through His people, causing them to call for the destruction of the evil plans of the principalities of darkness. He will also cause many to come out of the darkness into His kingdom of light. The Bible says:

"Also the sons of the foreigner who join themselves to the LORD, to serve Him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be His servants. Even them I will bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer." (Isaiah 56:6-7 NKJV)

"Let the saints be joyful in glory; let them sing aloud on their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand, To execute vengeance on the nations, and punishments on the peoples; To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; To execute on them the written judgment-- this honor have all His saints. Praise the LORD!" (Psalm. 149:5-9 NKJV)

"Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; but the LORD will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you. The Gentiles shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising." (Isaiah 60:1-3 NKJV)

"When the LORD brought back the captivity of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing. Then they said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them." (Psalm 126:1-2 NKJV)

C. We will be filled with Godís zeal to see Jesus exalted in all the world.

God has always loved and honored His Son, even before the foundations of the world. God created the world through Him so that we would also know and honor His Son. This desire of God is fulfilled in His Heavenly City. Both the Father and the Son are worshipped here, where the glory of Christ is fully manifested. The zeal God has for seeing His Son exalted in all the world will come forth in and through those in His Heavenly City. Through His Spirit we will receive the love the Father has for His Son. The Holy Spirit will also give us the zeal and reverence the Son has for His Father. We will desire that the fire and reverence they have for each other be manifested and experienced by all of Godís people. The Bible says:

"Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world." (John 17:24 NKJV)

"For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this." (Isaiah 9:6-7 NKJV)

"Jehovah said to my Lord the Messiah, "Rule as my regent- I will subdue your enemies and make them bow low before you." (Psalm 110:1 TLB)

"Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven." (Matthew 6:10 NKJV)

D. Prayer

Godís house is to be a house of prayer. There will be prayer on Mt. Zion, the Heavenly Jerusalem. There will be prayer for the nations to know Jesus and come to Him. There will be prayer for Godís people to be healed and made holy. There will be prayer for those ministering Godís Word and serving Him. Jesus Himself is praying here, and His Spirit of prayer will come into those who dwell here. The Bible says:

"Also the sons of the foreigner who join themselves to the LORD, to serve Him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be His servants, even them I will bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on My altar; for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations." (Isaiah 56:6-7 NKJV)

"He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them." (Hebrews 7:25 NKJV)

E. God will speak from Mt. Zion.

God will speak to the world from His Heavenly Place. He spoke to His people from Mt. Sinai on earth when He gave them His Holy Commandments. Now He is speaking from heaven. He is not speaking only to the people on the earth; He will also be speaking to the spiritual powers that reign in the heavens. The Bible says:

"See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, "Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven." (Hebrews12:25-27 NKJV)

"The LORD also will roar from Zion, and utter His voice from Jerusalem; the heavens and earth will shake; but the LORD will be a shelter for His people, and the strength of the children of Israel." (Joel 3:16 NKJV)

II. The Blessings, Duties and Results of Living as a Resident of Mt. Zion

A. We will begin to know, receive and live for the glory of Jesus.

Jesus wants us to be with Him where He is so that we can know and experience His glory. Only through the Holy Spirit, the Spirit who lives in and flows through Jesus, can we know and experience the glory of Jesus. This will happen as we focus on the glory of Jesus and let His glory come into us and through us through the Holy Spirit. As we let the Holy Spirit purify us and unite us with the purposes of God, we will grow in our knowledge and experience of the glory of God in Christ. The Bible says:

"Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. (John 17:24 NKJV)

"He [the Holy Spirit] will glorify Me [Jesus], for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you." (John 16:14-15 NKJV)

"But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord." (2 Corinthians 3:18 NKJV)

"And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:" (John 17:22 NKJV)

"...that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man," (Ephesians 3:16 NKJV)

B. We will receive and experience Godís desire for us to be a holy people

As we focus on the greatness of God, on His heavenly city, and on living for Him and declaring Christ in all the nations, God will purify us and make us holy. We will want Him to do this for us as we become more aware of His desire for us to be holy as He is holy. We will become more like Jesus as we learn to behold His Glory. We will be freed from those things that attach us to this earth as we become filled with love for God and the love of God for the nations. We will love what God loves, hate what He hates, and be freed from our attachments to the things of this world. Christís glory, manifested by the Holy Spirit, will fill us, enabling us to manifest the glory of God to others. The Bible says:

"Now this, ĎYet once more,í indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire." (Hebrews12:27-29 NKJV)

"He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love." (Ephesians 1:4 NKJV)

C. We will live as kings and priests before God.

Jesus, reigning in glory, is our Great High Priest. He calls us to reign with Him and to serve God with Him. We are called to reign as we bring about the reign of Christ into us and into the world. We can seek God to establish the reign of Christ in our personal lives, in our homes, families, communities, nations and the world. We can execute the authority Christ has given us as we go about our tasks of serving Him.

As priests we can serve God in His temple. We can worship Him and express our thankfulness for all He has done and is doing. We can bring to God the needs of the people we are involved with, as we pray on their behalf. We can bring to others the spiritual and material blessings God has given us, as we manifest Godís presence and love to them. The Bible says:

"But you shall be named the priests of the LORD, they shall call you the servants of our God." (Isaiah 61:6 NKJV)

"But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;" (1 Peter 2:9 NKJV)

"To Him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by His blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve His God and Father--to Him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen." (Revelation 1:5-6 NIV)

D. We will manifest on earth the blessings of the Heavenly Jerusalem.

God rewards those who seek Him diligently. Those who live in His Holy Place, the heavenly Jerusalem, will experience His rewards. The joy of living in His Presence will be manifest in us and we then will want to manifest this joy to those who still dwell on the earth. The peace and love that fill Godís heavenly city will be increasingly manifest to those who learn to dwell there, and they will manifest these spiritual blessings to others. The material blessings God provides His people who have sought to live in and enjoy His kingdom will be given freely to others by those living in the heavenly kingdom.

The supernatural power, wisdom, and knowledge of God, and His ability to give spiritual revelation and direction to His people, will become a regular part of the lives of those who dwell in the heavenly kingdom. Their desire will be to encourage others of Godís people to draw closer to Him. The glory of living there will be made known abroad by Godís people as they become more fully aware of all God has for them in His kingdom. The Bible says:

"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him." (Hebrews11:6 NKJV)

"You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore." (Psalm16:11 NKJV)

"Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him!" (Psalm 34:8 NKJV)

"Oh, fear the LORD, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him." (Psalm 34:9 NKJV)

"All Your works shall praise You, O LORD, and Your saints shall bless You. They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom, and talk of Your power, To make known to the sons of men His mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of His kingdom." (Psalm 145:10-12 NKJV)

E. As God builds up Mt. Zion, He will come to shake the heaven and earth.

Some of Godís people are living in Godís heavenly city and are aware of all the blessings they have available to them there. They are living focused on Jesus and on following the leading of the Holy Spirit of God as He manifests the will and power of God to them. Others have been brought into the heavenly city but are not aware of all that is available to them or do not want to fully leave the "pleasures" of this world. They have not understood the magnificent pleasures of living in the heavenly city. They are called "carnal" by Paul (1 Corinthians 3:1-4) and are called "foolish virgins" by Jesus (Matthew 25:1-12). Still others of Godís people are still living under the kingdom of this world. They need to hear Godís call to come out.

As God sends His Spirit to call some out of the ways of the world and others to come fully into His heavenly kingdom, He will also bring judgment to the earth. The spiritual powers that rule in this world will be shaken. The ability to live solely for the pleasures and lusts of this world will be removed. Even the unbelievers will be "forced" to follow the new spirits that will be manifest on this earth. All will become spiritual followers, either of the Spirit of God through Christ, or of the spirit of satan through false religions and spiritual antichrists. God will cause the darkness of sin to increase while He calls His people to come into the increased manifestation of His presence and light. Great darkness and spiritual deception will come upon those who dwell on the earth. Godís anger and wrath will be manifest. Those who heed Godís call to come ever closer to Him and receive the things of His Spirit will experience great peace and joy amidst the chaos. The Bible says:

"And I heard another voice from heaven saying, "Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues." (Revelation 18:4 NKJV)

"But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all,...now He has promised, saying, ĎYet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven.í Now this, ĎYet once more,í indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain." (Hebrews 12:22, 23, 26, 27 NKJV)

"Therefore it shall come to pass, when the LORD has performed all His work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, that He will say, ĎI will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his haughty looks.í" (Isaiah 10:12 NKJV)

"So the nations shall fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth Your glory. For the LORD shall build up Zion; he shall appear in His glory." (Psalm102:15-16 NKJV)

"The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ĎPrepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted and every mountain and hill brought low; the crooked places shall be made straight and the rough places smooth; The glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.í" (Isaiah 40:3-5 NKJV)

"For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; but the LORD will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you." (Isaiah 60:2 NKJV)

F. The prayers of Godís heavenly people will call upon God to accomplish these things.

God is revealing His plan and releasing His desires. He is hardening the hearts of His enemies and they are banding together, thinking they will thwart Godís plans. He is preparing His people to seek Him in ways they have never thought possible. He is leading them to ask Him to do the things He desires.

God is moving His people to pray. He is calling many to fast and pray like they never have before. Many are fasting and praying for 40-day periods. Individuals, churches, and groups are doing this, and national and international prayer movements are encouraging it. God is leading His church to become world-centered Christians. Mission agencies have received and identified strategies to enable the Gospel of the glories of Christ to be preached to all the nations within the next several years. Many are being sent to pray in locations where the gospel has not yet penetrated, witnessing to the spiritual powers of the forthcoming judgments of God. God is leading His people to pray and act so the things He desires to do will come forth through the prayers of His people. The Bible says:

"Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets." (Amos 3:7 NKJV)

"And the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire. For God has put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled." (Revelation 17:16-17 NKJV)

"Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen." (Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV)

"Even them I will bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on My altar; for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations." (Isaiah56:6-7 NKJV)

"And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come." (Matthew24:14 NKJV)

"Let the saints be joyful in glory; let them sing aloud on their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand, To execute vengeance on the nations, and punishments on the peoples; To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; To execute on them the written judgment--this honor have all His saints. Praise the LORD!" (Psalm149:5-9 NKJV)

G. The Lord will bring in the harvest when the nations are gathered against His people, and then the end will come.

God is calling His church out of Babylon, into His Heavenly kingdom (Revelation 18:4). The kingdom of antichrist will unite the false religions of this world in the destruction of Babylon. Then this kingdom will try to destroy Godís people, Jews in Israel and His saints. But God will arise and destroy the kingdom of the beast as He establishes the reign of Christ in the hearts of His people and in the Heavenly Places through all of His saints, Jew and Gentile. Many will be converted during these final days. Hallelujah! The Bible says:

"And the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire. For God has put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled. And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth." (Revelation 17:16-18 NKJV)

"The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful." (Revelation 17:12-14 NKJV)

"Let the nations be wakened, and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations. Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, go down; for the winepress is full, the vats overflow- for their wickedness is great. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. The sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will diminish their brightness. The LORD also will roar from Zion, and utter His voice from Jerusalem; the heavens and earth will shake; but the LORD will be a shelter for His people, and the strength of the children of Israel. So you shall know that I am the LORD your God, dwelling in Zion My holy mountain. Then Jerusalem shall be holy, and no aliens shall ever pass through her again." (Joel 3:12-17 NKJV)

"For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: ĎThe Deliverer will come out of Zion, and He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;í" (Romans 11:25-26 NKJV)

"Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory". (Mathew. 24:29-30 NKJV)

"He [Jesus] who testifies to these things says, ĎSurely I am coming quickly.í Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!" (Revelation 22:20 NKJ)
