A Thought for the Week--God is in Christ

Thursday, February 15, 2007

"Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works." (John 14:10 NKJ)

Jesus said that He and His Father were one. He lived in His Father. He sought and did the will of His Father. His meat was to do the will of His Father. He knew His Father. He knew He was loved by His Father. He knew that before He came to the earth He and His Father were one. In eternity, Jesus and His Father loved each other. At the end of time, at the time when heaven and earth are once again fully restored, Jesus and His Father will be one.

This is the mystery of the Trinity--three Beings, all of the same essence, being fully united: the Father loving the Son, and revealing His plan to Him; the Son loving the Father and knowing His call to reveal and declare the plan of God to the world; the Holy Spirit flowing from the will of the Father into the will of the Son, communicating the love and desires of each of them to each other, and empowering the words of the Son into the hearts of people in the world.

The Holy Spirit loves the Father. When He comes into our heart, He leads our spirit to become united with Himself and we cry out, "Abba Father." The Holy Spirit loves the Son. He reveals and brings the ways, the nature and the love of Jesus into all of our being. Only through the Holy Spirit living and working in us can we know that Jesus is Lord and truly know God.

Jesus desires that we become one with Him in the same way that He is one with His Father. He sends the Holy Spirit to us so that we can know the Father who dwells in Him. The Father sent Jesus to restore us to Himself, as Jesus is in Him. The life of God loves God. The Father loves the Son and the Spirit is united with each of their beings manifesting the truth of that love.

Now God wants us to enter the harmonious relationship that exists within the Godhead. We have been created in the image of God, so that our spirit can flow though our will and express love for God. Jesus lives in us so that He can cleanse our inner being from our self-centered ways and fill it with His ways so that we can, by nature, express love to God. We can be filled with the Spirit of God, and our own selves can become united with the ways of God.

There is nothing higher than the nature and character of God. There is nothing that can measure up to the wisdom of God. He is far above our best efforts, our best ideas, our best plans. God is God. He is Holy. God is wise enough to know that there is nothing better than Himself. We, as men, are still trying to grasp that concept. With the grace of God we shall know these things.

Father, we rejoice in Your majestic and Holy Being. We rejoice that You and Your Son and the Holy Spirit are united as one. Help us to grasp these truths and give us grace to receive and live in them. Amen.
