A Thought for the Day--Receiving the Righteousness of God

September 18, 2008

For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory.  (2 Corinthians 3:7-9 NKJ)

God is righteous.  He loves to be righteous.  He loves to do what is right.  He loves to do what is right because He is righteous.  He loves to impart His righteousness into us. When we receive His righteousness, we too have in us a desire to do right.  We become filled with the love of righteousness, and we love to do what is right.  The love of God and the righteousness of God in us also give us a desire for others to be filled with a desire to be righteous and to love what is right.  We become carriers of the righteousness of God and want to see others living in righteousness and wanting others to live in and love righteousness as they do.

Man was created good.  He had access to continually receiving God's righteousness but chose to seek his own standard of righteousness, when he listened to the devil in the garden.  When Jesus came to earth, He lived in righteousness.  From Jesus' childhood, the Holy Spirit was encouraging Him in the righteous ways of God.  The Bible says, "And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him" (Luke 2:40 NKJ).  He became the vessel of God to bring God's righteous ways into humanity.  The Bible says, "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJ).

Now Jesus reigns in glory, able and called to minister His righteous ways into us.  We no longer need to depend upon ourselves to try to be righteous.  We can be freed from our bondage to sinful desires and free to have a nature that loves God and His righteousness!  We can live in the righteousness of God, continually receiving the flow of the Holy Spirit into our lives to enable us to live righteously, above the sinful desires of our flesh.  The Bible says, "...those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:17 NKJ).

The purpose of the Law, given at Mount Sinai, was to bring revelation to the people that their sinful desires could not be overcome with the promise of rewards for doing right.  The Law was a ministry of condemnation, according to our opening passage.  The Gospel is a ministry of righteousness.  Our sins can be removed by the shedding of Christ's blood, and God can impart His righteousness into us through the heavenly ministry of Christ.  This is what God had promised to the nation of Israel and is now making a reality through His church.  The Bible says, "'Behold, the days are coming,' says the LORD, ' That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.  In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely; now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS'" (Jeremiah 23:5-6 NKJ).  The reign of Jesus is being manifested in us and through us, and into and over all the nations.  He is our RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Father, we rejoice that You reign through Jesus and that He reigns in us.  We rejoice that Your desire to bring Your righteous ways into us, and through us into the world, are being fulfilled by Christ living in us.  Truly You are righteous, You have been righteous, and You ever will be righteous.  We rejoice that we are being made the righteousness of God in Christ.  Amen.
