A Thought for the Day--Be Filled with THE Spirit

September 22, 2008

And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (Ephesians 5:18-20 NKJ)

God is a Spirit.  The Holy Spirit dwells in God.  God loves to have His Spirit dwell in us.  He created us so that we could be indwelt by and led by His Holy Spirit.  Jesus lived this way; the Bible says, "For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily" (Colossians 2:9 NKJ); and again, "Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness" (Luke 4:1 NKJ).

When I was drunk with alcohol, other spirits had access to me.  I was under their influence and power.  God's answer for those under such a sinful addiction and bondage is to be "filled with the Spirit."  The words "be filled" are literally "be being filled."  God's answer implies that they can live in the reality of the continuous flood of the Holy Spirit as He comes from God in heaven.  Jesus said that those who believe in Him would have the Holy Spirit flowing out of their bellies (John 7:38-39).

When the Holy Spirit fills us, we will have songs, hymns and spiritual songs flowing forth from us.  Our spirit, in union with the Spirit of God, will be filled with words and songs of adoration and praise for God.  Prophetic utterances will flow from us, manifested by words and songs; sometimes they will spontaneously flow from us with words and songs we have not expressed before.  We will express new songs and phrases, and even we will say, "This was from God."

Being filled with the Spirit will lead us into new and deeper levels of holiness and peace.  We will be able to "...pursue peace with all men, and holiness..." so that we can know and see all that God is doing and has for us.  There is great joy in living in the fullness of the Spirit and participating in God's plans and purposes as He brings all things into Christ and brings His kingdom to the earth, uniting heaven and earth in Him.

Many are filled with "a spirit" other than their own.  People without the Spirit of God are being energized by other spirits.  Some call these spirits "higher powers." The Bible says these people  are walking "according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in [energizes] the sons of disobedience" (Ephesians 2:2 NKJ).  But the Spirit of God in us is greater than these other spirits.  These evil spirits could not hold Jesus in hell, even when He had our sin on Him.  God by His Spirit raised Jesus from the dead, through the levels of the "higher powers," and made Him reign far above all other spiritual beings.  We have been raised up together with Christ, by the same Holy Spirit; through the Holy Spirit we can now reign with Him in this life (Romans 5:17).  Praise be to Him!

Father, we rejoice in You and in the power of Your Holy Spirit.  Help us to live in the anointing of Your Spirit in Christ so that we can serve You as You bring all things under Christ.  Praise be to You, Father, Son and Holy Spirit!  Amen.
