A Thought for the Week—Jesus’ Victory in Us

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

"For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.” (Romans 5:10 NKJ)

When we are born, we are born with desires to live for ourselves--doing what we want, living for self-recognition, wanting people to like us and to notice us.  We don’t want to be told what to do, or to have to do what others know and think is best for us.  This is why children need to be taught obedience and need to be spanked and disciplined when they disobey.  The spirit that energizes us in this state is that of the rulers of the darkness of this world.  The Bible says, “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others” (Ephesians 2:1-3 NKJ).

The Bible calls us in this state “enemies of God.”    In that state of being, we do not want to live in righteousness; rather we would like to live righteously enough not to get into trouble, or to be punished for wrongdoing, but wanting to do what would please our fleshly desires and bring pleasure to our bodily lusts.  We are not only enemies of God, but we see God’s laws and desires as our enemies.

But God gives us the grace to receive a new life through His Son!  He gives us the ability to receive His nature and character and to come into the life of Jesus and out of our old ways.  This is the Gospel message.  We can be reconciled to God through accepting the truth of our rebelliousness and receiving His forgiveness.   Having been reconciled, we then can be changed through receiving the life of God and allowing this life to live in us and to direct our lives.  We can exchange our rebellious ways for His righteous ways.  We can put off the old man and put on the new man.  We can let the life of Christ give us victory over our sinful ways, just as Christ overcame the desires of His flesh through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The new life of Christ can empower us so that we too can love and live in the will of God as Jesus did.  We can enjoy the ways of heaven on earth, and experience the joy of serving God and living for Him on earth.  Truly we can do the will of God on earth, in the same way it is done in heaven.  Let us rejoice and live in Him and for Him!

Father, we rejoice in Your ways and in Your righteous life.  Help us to continually be empowered by Your life and to live in Christ and know the joy of Your salvation.  Amen.
