Let Us Therefore Come Boldly to the Throne of Grace (Hebrews 4:16)

“There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.  For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.” (Hebrews 4:9-10 NKJ)

These are anxious times for many.  The economic situation is changing.  Some are having to endure the hardship of unemployment; others are troubled by reductions in investment accounts; still others are having difficulty with their home mortgages.  The government is choosing to step in and bail out many corporations and even industries, lest the economy take an even further plunge.  The depth of greed in man is being revealed.  Corruption in government is also being revealed daily, and many state and local governments are in precarious financial positions.

The writer of Hebrews ends chapter four with the admonition, “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16 NKJ). This word gives hope for us in all times, especially times like this.  There are some things we should know and follow from the verses prior to the last verse of this chapter.  Today’s verse is the first of these.

There remains a rest for the people of God.  We can rest from our own labors, our striving to make things happen, our worrying and trying to figure out what to do.  God has in Himself the strategy and plan for us to follow.  When He created the world, He also put into motion the things we need to do when difficulties arise.  In Him is the wisdom we need.  All that He desires for us to do is contained in Himself.  The Bible says that, before He created things, God knew all that He needs to do for His creation.  He created the world, having thought out before the creation began, all He would need to do to bring about His plan and purposes.  “Known to God from eternity are all His works” (Acts 15:18 NKJ).  God is not having to “think up” an answer.  He has known what will happen and what should be done to bring about His plan.  He is “resting” in His perfect, pre-ordained solution to our problems and in His plan for us and His creation.  He invites us to enter His rest and come to His throne of grace; there He will reveal to us what we should do in these times, and then He will empower us with His Spirit so we can do what He has pre-ordained for us to do.

God is resting in His plan and invites us to enter His rest.  As we meditate on His presence in us, and our presence with Him in the heaven of heavens, He will bring us into a state of peace.  From there He will reveal Himself and His ways to us.  Living in His rest implies that we receive His plan and purposes and then live them out through His power and life in us.  Let us enter His rest, His plan, His desires and His power, by coming boldly to the throne of grace and spending time meditating and communing with Him.

Father, we rejoice in Your great wisdom, plans and purposes.  Help us to understand that You have all things prepared for us in Yourself, for each day and situation of life.  Help us to come boldly to Your throne of grace, and to hear, receive and execute Your desire and will each day.  Amen.

Let Us Therefore Come Boldly to the Throne of Grace (Hebrews 4:16)

“Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience” (Hebrews 4:11 NKJ).

We can know what to do in these difficult, stress-filled times.  We can receive revelation from God as to what we should do and what His purposes are for us in the situations in which we find ourselves.  We can come into God’s rest.  God is resting in His pre-ordained plan and His pre-ordained strategies for His creation.  God does not have to come up with some new plans because of the increasingly difficult situations many of us are in.  God is not anxious about what is happening.  He does not have to fret about what is happening and call a counsel of angels to devise some new strategy to meet the needs of His people.  Before the foundation of the world, God had already predetermined the plan for all we need.  He is resting in this plan, which is already in Him.  He is just waiting for us to come to Him and to let Him reveal His plan to us so we can live in it.  He is resting in this plan and invites us to enter His rest, not fretting about what to do, but rather living in Him and letting Him reveal to us and impart into us what He has already determined should be done.

The verse for today’s consideration calls us to be diligent to enter that rest, remembering that many of the Israelites who came out of Egypt did not enter God’s rest and then did not enter into the promised land.  The Israelites had seen God’s power in the plagues.  They had seen God divide the Red Sea and destroy the Egyptian army.  They had seen Him miraculously provide for them time and time again in the wilderness.  BUT when they came to the promised land and saw and heard of the giants and many enemies that were in the land, they did not want to enter the land and fight against these enemies.  They did not believe that God could give them complete victory over the enemies that were in the land He had promised to them.  God had, in Himself, the plan for their victory.  He had pre-ordained the plan for the Israelites.  The plan, strategy, and power for victory were all in God.  God was resting in this pre-ordained plan.  He invited the Israelites to enter His rest, by believing in Him and letting Him reveal His plan to them step by step.

Previously in this chapter the Holy Spirit said, “For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: ‘So I swore in My wrath, they [the Israelites] shall not enter My rest,’ although the works were finished from the foundation of the world” (Hebrews 4:3 NKJ).  This affirms what was just stated.  God has a plan for us, our family, our community, our nation and His world.  He is inviting us to participate with Him in this plan.  Amidst the difficulties of our present situation, He will continue to reveal His plan to us and to show us the things He has pre-ordained for us to do in these days.  Later in Hebrews God shares how He shakes things so that only the ways of His kingdom shall remain.  We have prayed for His kingdom to come and His will to be done.  Let us enter into His rest as He brings this about in these difficult days.

Father, we rejoice in Your great wisdom and the great love, mercy and grace You have for us.  Help us to come even deeper into Your rest in these days, as You call us to come boldly to Your throne of grace.  Amen.
