A Thought for the Week--The Excellent Name of Our God

Monday December 4, 2006

O Lord our Lord How excellent is Thy Name in all the Earth.

Our God is Lord. He reigns in heaven above. He has exalted His Son as king of kings and Lord of Lords and made Him to reign over all spiritual powers and principalities in the middle heaven. Jesus Christ reigns over all the earth. He is Lord.

The appreciation of the Lordship of Jesus becomes real and marvelous to us when we acknowledge Him not only as THE Lord, but also as our Lord. When we give Him Lordship over our lives we realize His ways and the excellence of His many names.

His name is wonderful the Bible says. We will know Him as the wonderful one when we give Him Lordship over all of our lives.

His name is counselor, the Bible says. When we make Him our Lord we will know His ability to direct and give counsel to us. He will be able to keep us on the right track.

His name is mighty God, the Bible says. When we make Him our Lord, we will know His ability to protect us from the plans of the evil one, and we will know of His ability to send His angels to keep us in all our ways.

His name is everlasting Father. When we make Him our Lord we will know His ability to be a father to us of all the heavenly blessings He has at our disposal. He is able to impart into us the heavenly life of God. He is able to impart into us the divine nature of God.

God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or thing when we know the names of He Son. We can know Him by letting Him be our Lord.

Father, we rejoice in you and in Your great name. Help us to let Jesus be our Lord so we can know Him and His names.

A Thought for the Week--The Excellent Name of Our God

Wednesday, December 6, 2006

"O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth, who set Your glory above the heavens! Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants you have ordained strength, because of Your enemies, that You may silence the enemy and the avenger." (Psalm 8:1-2 NKJ)

There is a God who rules in the heavens over all. The Apostle John had a revelation of God in the heavens: He SAW THE HEAVENS OPENED ABOVE HIM. He then saw a throne in the heavens, and a man on the throne. He saw Jesus Christ, the very Son of God, seated on the throne of heaven, reigning over all the world.

God reigns from His glorious place in the heavens above all the earth. He has also exalted Jesus over all the earth. He has righteously exalted Jesus over all, because all have rejected Him and wanted Him to be crucified and put to death.

The passage of the week shows that God uses children and childlike people to dethrone the spiritual powers that rule in the heavens over the earth. The Bible says, "Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants you have ordained strength, because of Your enemies, that You may silence the enemy and the avenger."

We have enemies; we have an avenger--Satan, the devil. Jesus said that our enemy, the devil, seeks to kill, to destroy, and to steal. Jesus taught us to pray that our Father would deliver us from the evil one. He knew the reality of the devil and his spiritual powers that rule over the earth. He recognized Satan’s right to rule, when Satan said to Him, "…all the kingdoms of the earth have been given to me."

But God has a plan. He has a plan to deliver us from the ways of Satan. He will use those who humble themselves as His children and come to Him, dependent upon Him. His name is holy; He will meet us and help us.

Father, we rejoice in Your desire to help us. Help us to come to You as Your children, knowing our need and dependence upon You. Amen.

A Thought for the Week—The Excellent Name of Our God

"O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth, who set Your glory above the heavens! Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants you have ordained strength, because of Your enemies, that You may silence the enemy and the avenger." (Psalm 8:1-2 NKJ)

Our God reigns. Jesus is Lord of all. He reigns in the heavens far above the reigning spiritual powers over the territories and peoples of the earth. God has a way of bringing about the reign of Christ into all the nations. The psalmist says, " Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants you have ordained strength, because of Your enemies, that You may silence the enemy and the avenger." (Psalm 8:1-2 NKJ) God uses weak people like us, and even children and nursing infants, to praise Him and to pray to Him and through our childlike actions of faith, trust, and adoration, our enemies can be defeated.

We have spiritual enemies who seek to rob, kill and destroy. But they have been defeated by Jesus and now His life in us can give us the victory we need. God has promised in the new covenant that we would have victory over all our enemies. The Bible says that God would "grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life." (Luke 1:74-75 NKJ)

We can, by our worship, defeat our enemies. We can, by our prophetic declarations, defeat our enemies. We can, by our prayers, DEFEAT OUR ENEMIES. We can, by uniting with other believers, defeat our enemies. We can, by hearing from God, obtain His strategies for defeating our enemies. God has many ways to impart His victorious ways into us and through us, so that through us He can defeat our enemies.

We are in a spiritual war. The Bible is clear on this. God has started it so that He can give us victory over our enemies. He will complete His work of bringing all things under Christ. He will bring down the spiritual rulers so that Christ might reign in the heavens with us, and His kingdom ways can fill heaven and earth. Let us exalt Him, follow His plan and let Him use us in His way of bringing forth His victory.

Father we love You and submit ourselves to You so that through us You might bring about the destruction of our enemies so the world can be filled with Your glory.

A Thought for the Week—The Excellent Name of Our God

"O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth, who set Your glory above the heavens! …What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; you have put all things under his feet….O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth! (Psalm 8:1, 4-6, 9 NKJ)

David, the author of this Psalm, is reflecting on the greatness of the name of God. We have shared some of these things during this week. Then David goes on to declare, "What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; you have put all things under his feet," (Psalm 8: 4-6 NKJ)

God, in His very nature, is awesome. He is holy. He does holy and awesome things because His nature and very Being is holy and awesome. The Bible says His name is Holy One, Shepherd, Righteous One, Provider, Healer, Ever-present One. God reveals His awesomeness to us through His actions, His names, and His Son.

Our great and awesome and holy God has chosen to rule the universe through His people. He is committed to bringing all things under the dominion of Jesus so that Jesus can live in us and rule the universe through us. God is committed to making us Christ-like, so that we will be able to handle the duties and responsibilities of ruling the universe with Christ.

Jesus told His disciples, "Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom" (Luke 12:32 NKJ). He had previously told His disciples to pray that the kingdom of God would come on the earth. Now He tells them that the kingdom will come THROUGH THEM. In the Book of Revelation, Jesus says, "And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations--He shall rule them with a rod of iron; they shall be dashed to pieces like the potter's vessels--as I also have received from My Father;" (Revelation 2:26-27 NKJ)

OUR God reigns. His kingdom is coming through Christ reigning in us. We are called to overcome. Through Christ we shall overcome in this life. That is why David concludes the Psalm as he began it, "O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth."

Father, we are humbled by Your majesty and glory. We are brought to our knees as we consider that You will reign through Christ in us. Help us to be all You want us to be. Amen.
