It is Finished
"When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar,
he said, It is finished:
When Jesus completed His work on the cross He said "It is Finished." His work was finished. Several things were finished when Jesus died. The primary work that was accomplished was that atonement was made for our sins. Jesus took our sins and our sinful ways upon Himself and suffered the righteous wrath of God that God had towards those that have sinned. Godís wrath is stirred up when we choose to rebel against Him and go our separate ways. His wrath is stirred up when we choose to obey Satan and defy the ways of God. His wrath is stirred up when we encourage others to live for themselves and defy the ways of God. Jesus bore our sins. He suffered the righteous anger of God towards us by taking our sins upon Himself and receiving the punishment of God.
The Father turned His back on His Son, as part of the punishment that Jesus must bear. Jesus cried out, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46). God also saw the completeness of the sufferings of Christ and was satisfied. The Bible says, "He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied." (Isaiah 53:11). Jesus then was able to say, "It is finished." The work of suffering for our sins was accomplished.
BUT there is more. Jesus not only paid for our sins, He also won the victory over sin for us. He never sinned. Now He can impart His life into us. We can receive a life from God, the very life of His Son, into our being. We can receive a life that has been victorious over sin, and now lives only to please His Father into our being. His life can give us victory over sin. His life can become united with our spirit, enabling us to bringing our old sinful ways into death, and giving us the desire and the strength to live for God as He is. We can have victory over sin through His life living in us. The Bible says:
"For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:" (Romans 8:3 KJV)
Jesus overcame sin. He condemned it for us.
"For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he lives, he lives unto God." (Romans 6:10 KJV)
Jesus not only died for sin for me. He died to sin for me. He not only suffered the penalty of sin for me, He also overcame sin for me. He has a life that is living for God.
"Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:11 KJV)
Now, when I let His life rule in me, I can have a life in me that is dead to sin active in me. I can have a life that only wants to live for God reign in me.
Jesus suffered for me. He also overcame sin for me. I can come to a holy God and know that I am forgiven when I appropriate the suffering and death of Christ for me. I can have victory over every sin when I appropriate the new life that God gives me in Christ, a life that is dead to sin but alive to God. My struggle against sin can be replaced by receiving His victory over sin for me. Truly I can say with Christ, "IT IS FINISHED."
