OUR HEART CONTAINS OUR REAL SELF -- OUR NATURE
When the Bible talks about our heart, it usually is not speaking about the physical organ that we have that pumps blood throughout our bodies. Rather, our heart in Biblical terms means the very center or core of our being. Our heart represents what we really are, not what we think we are or what we pretend to be, or what we would like to be. The heart of man thus reflects his very nature. I can hide my heart from some, and parts of my heart from all, including myself, but God knows my heart. He loves me in spite of myself. He loves the real me - not the me I might think that I am, or pretend to be. He loves me enough to want to change my heart - to give me a new heart - to change my very nature. He can and will do this through Jesus Christ. When I receive Jesus into my heart, asking Him to save me from my sinful ways, Jesus will begin His work of revealing my heart to me, so that I can confess my sins, let Him heal the hurt and pain in my heart, and begin to experience consciously His presence in my heart.
The following Scriptures will help us understand our heart, and how God works in it as we receive the Spirit of Christ into our heart.
1. OUR HEART CONTAINS OUR REAL SELF -- OUR NATURE:
"As in water face answers to face, so the heart of man to man." (Proverbs 27:19 KJV)
"But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7 KJV)
2. IT IS A STOREHOUSE OF OUR ATTITUDES, DESIRES, AND BEHAVIOR PATTERNS:
"For a good tree brings not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks." (Luke 6:43-45 KJV)
"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." (Proverbs 4:23 KJV)
"And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares." (Luke 21:34 KJV)
"I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices: my flesh also shall rest in hope." (Psalms 16:8-9 KJV)
"Heaviness in the heart of man makes it stoop: but a good word makes it glad." (Proverbs 12:25 KJV)
"Hope deferred makes the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life." (Proverbs 13:12 KJV)
"A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken." (Proverbs 15:13 KJV)
"A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones." (Proverbs 17:22 KJV)
6. THE LORD UNDERSTANDS AND CARES ABOUT THE BROKENNESS IN OUR HEART:
"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saves such as be of a contrite spirit." (Psalms 34:18 KJV)
"For thus says the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones." (Isaiah 57:15 KJV)
"Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us." (Psalms 62:8 KJV)
"Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still." (Psalms 4:4 KJV)
"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV)
"Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?" (Ezekiel 18:31 KJV)
"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded." (James 4:8 KJV)
"I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart." (Psalms 40:8 KJV)
"Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." (Psalms 119:11 KJV)
"My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." (Proverbs 4:20-23 KJV)
"And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart." (Jeremiah 24:7 KJV)
"And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh: That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God." (Ezekiel 11:19-20 KJV)
Lord Jesus, come into my heart. Live in me and impart to me Your very nature. Help me to understand Your ways and to confess my sinful ways to You so that my heart may be cleansed by Your blood. Help me to bring to You the inner pains, anxieties and fears that I have stored within my heart, so that my heart can know and that I may consciously experience Your love and presence with me. Thank You Jesus, Amen.
