The Rest of God
The Bible says that God created the world in six days and on the seventh day He rested (Genesis 2:2). God is at rest. He is resting in His plan to bring the world under the reign of Jesus Christ. He has spoken to Jesus, "Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool" (Psalms 110:1 KJV). He is active in His plan. He is calling people to go forth under the direction of His Spirit and disciple the nations. He calls His people to put on the whole armor of God and to war against His enemies with Him and His heavenly hosts. God invites us to enter His rest. The Bible says "Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it." (Hebrews 4:1 KJV). God provides the invitation and the grace for us to come into and live in His rest. He explains later in Hebrews that those who live in His rest have ceased doing their own thing and are now simply doing what they see Him doing. He provides the desire for us to want to live for Him. He provides the grace for us to be freed from the guilt of our sin. He provides the sacrifice for us to be freed from the need for punishment due us because of our rebellion against Him. He provides the power and life for us to live apart from our sinful ways, living in the victory He provides over sin. He provides the ability for us to know and participate with Him in His plan for us and for the world. Jesus, while on earth, called people to come to Him and promised that He would give them rest. He is still the God given instrument, imparting to us the riches of His heavenly glory and life, through whom we might know, enter into, and abide in the rest of God. God is at rest in His plan.
When God called us to go into full time ministry over 16 years ago, we received a promise that His presence and rest would be with us. A woman who we had known for years called and told us that God had awakened her and told her to give us His word from Exodus 33:14 "My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest." (KJV). This would be a trademark of our ministry. We had known Godís presence always being with us, and now He was promising to increase the manifestation of His presence in our ministry and to bring us ever deeper into His rest. God has raised us up and anointed us so that we might be able to help His people come into His rest. He has asked us to walk in unfamiliar and sometimes undesirable (to us) places. Some examples of these are: trusting Him for our daily provision for 16 years, waiting for Him to provide the way for complete recovery for addicted people so that they might be free of the 12 step bondage, seeking out and ministering to the poor and needy in this nation and in the nations of the world, and becoming united with ministry leaders in the Catholic church and in Israel so that we might be partakers of the full blessings of Abraham. We have not yet fully arrived in continually living in Godís rest, but God has, over these 16 years, extended grace to us to begin to personally experience ourselves the reality of living in His rest so that we could then fulfill His call for us to lead others into living in His rest.
Twenty four years ago, in 1975, the Lord spoke to me through His word in Luke 14:28-33. He was calling me to let Him use me to bring healing and rest to His people through raising up healing and prayer ministries in His church. At the time my life was a shambles. My wife had divorced me and my children were following her admonition to abandon me. My alcoholism and sinful ways had hurt many and turned them against me. The only answer my church had was to turn me over to AA. But God still had His plan and purpose for me. As a child He called me into His ministry. I had said yes, and then abandoned His call. The "call" of the world and its allurements led me into "temporary success and rest" but then into eventual drunkenness. But God did not abandon His call for me. He was at rest, waiting for me to respond to Him. Now He was calling me to help His people come into total freedom from alcoholism and also from the other spiritual strongholds that had plagued my family, my generations, my community, nation and the world. He had birthed in me the desire to see His church be a place of healing and prayer for people from all nations (Luke 9:1-2; Isaiah 2:2). The passage in Luke 14, talked about the cost, about the commitment, and also about the power of God to do what only He could do. Over the past twenty four years we have seen God increase the scope and manifestation of that which He birthed in 1975. Godís plan is coming forth. We are resting in Godís plan to fully bring forth His plan for us. We can rest in this because God is at rest.
In 1977, the call and anointing for the ministry of CMI came to us. We did not know at the time what this would mean, but over the years God has shown us through His word what this aspect of our ministry would entail and His provision for us to accomplish this. He reminded us of the power of His anointing which was able to use a pagan king for the purpose of bringing His people out of Babylon and to call for and bring about its destruction, and to watch over the building of the new Jerusalem. At a recent national gathering of some of Godís current day prophets, the attributes of the CMI call and ministry were spoken to myself, affirming what God was about. My pastor was also able to know and hear the words spoken so that we both would know that this was the time for the CMI anointing to be manifest. At a recent service at our church one of the elders prophetically spoke of this being the time when the CMI anointing would be revealed to the nations. Godís plan is coming forth. God is at rest.
In 1978, God awakened me in the middle of the night and called me to pray. This had happened previously and is still occurring. (Many, many others have similar experiences.) While praying God called me to go to Mt Sinai. He affirmed this call by pre-announcing the birth date of our son to be Timothy. (Kay was eight months pregnant at the time.) Tim was born on the date God pre-announced. At Mt. Sinai God gave vision and revelation and spoke through Isaiah 51:16 and through Hebrews 12:22-29. There would be a time when He would shake the heavens and earth, bringing His people into His kingdom and rest. The spiritual strongholds would be destroyed, and the nations would come to His light. This is what I feel is beginning to happen now!!! God is calling, drawing, and bringing His people into His rest into His kingdom. Godís plan is coming forth. God is at rest.
In 1990 at an eldersí meeting at our church, the Spirit of God came upon another elder and me. We were unable to move for a period of time. We began to travail and to seek Godís mercy for us and for the nations. After about an hour of travailing intercession, my fellow elder began to prophesy. One of the things that came forth was, "I will visit this place. I will cause signs and wonders to be done here. What I will do here will go forth to the nations." Shortly after this night, the elders of our church called for the beginning of the weekly Jesus Cares Healing Services. Now, 9 years later, we are experiencing a greater outpouring of Godís Spirit at these services. God is at rest.
In January of this year, our churchís elders and their wives gathered with the senior Pastor of our church and his wife. They were leaving our church and moving up to Wisconsin. They had been with us for 30+ years and are now going into a semi retirement phase of their ministry. Before they left they blessed all the elders and their wives at the gathering in our home. Bev, the wife of our pastor, prophesied to Kay and I "the REST is coming." She stated this was the rest of all God had for our ministry, and also it was the REST of God that would be coming to our ministry in greater measure. Godís plan is coming forth. God is at rest.
God is at rest. Heís bringing His people into His rest. Heís freeing us from our striving and bringing us into His rest. Jesus won the victory over sin for us. He paid for our sin, being punished by God for us. He became sin for us, taking our sinful desires on Himself and saying no to our sinful desires for us. His victory was manifested at the cross of Calvary. He died to sin for us, and He died for sin for us at Calvary (2 Corinthians 5:15; Romans 6:10). Satanís power over sin in mankind was defeated. Jesus won the victory. He now lives to impart His victory into us. We can be all that God wants us to be and do all that God wants us to do, through Him. He has the power to extend to us so that this can happen. We can want to serve Him with our whole heart, God will conform us into the ways of Christ so that this will happen. We can expect to do supernatural things, say God inspired things, and know Godís thoughts and purposes in our circumstances. God will use every circumstance in our lives to bring us out of our wanting to do our own thing, so that we enter into His plan and manifest His will in all situations (Romans 8:28-29).
Jesus, the very Son of God, was made man, and was weak like us (Hebrews 4:15; Hebrews 5:1-2). The grace of God was on Jesus (Luke 2:40). The Spirit of God enabled Jesus to do miracles (Matthew 12:28). The Spirit of God gave Jesus the ability to live a sinless life and to live a life continually surrendered to the will and purposes of God (Hebrews 9:14; John 5:30). Jesus lived in the Spirit of God. He walked by the Spirit of God. He spoke what the Spirit gave Him to say (John 14:10). He modeled for us what a human could be for God. Now He lives able to impart His Spirit into us, able to encourage us in being like Him. God is bringing His people into such a lifestyle. We too can be led by the Spirit. We too can walk in the Spirit of God. We are called to do this and God is bringing us into the reality of living like this. We can trust in Jesus who says, "Come unto me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." God is at rest. We can live in His rest; Jesus is calling us to do so. He is able to do in us what He calls us to receive from Him. Be at rest in His rest. This is our prayer for you. God is at rest.
The Rest of God - Thereís more. We are putting together a booklet on this topic. Additional sections will include: Unbelief, the greatest hindrance to living in Godís rest; The deceitfulness of sin, that which keeps us out of Godís rest; The blood of Jesus, that which draws us into Godís rest; The Holy Spirit, He who keeps us able to abide in His rest; Continually living in Godís rest-Godís promise for us.
